World Heart Day 2018 – Beer and cardiovascular health

29 September is World Heart Day. A day dedicated to raise awareness of heart health. A healthy lifestyle can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Moderate beer consumption can be part of this healthy lifestyle and can help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. To make people aware of this, Beer and Health produced a short movie to explain the effect of moderate beer consumption on cardiovascular health.

Association alcohol and sleep apnea further investigated

Alcohol is suggested to increase the risk of sleep apnea. A new meta-analysis now combines data from randomized controlled trials to further investigate this proposed association. Results show that alcohol is related to several breathing parameters related to sleep apnea. The meta-analysis was recently published in the scientific journal Sleep Medicine Reviews.

The Dutch Beer Institute offers grant of € 5,000 for researchers

The Dutch Beer Institute offers a grant of € 5,000 for the study of responsible alcohol/beer consumption in a healthy lifestyle. The project should focus on biomedical, nutritional or (psycho-)social aspects of responsible alcohol consumption, specifically taking into account (non-alcoholic) beer. Application deadline is 26 November 2018.

Effect alcohol consumption on hypertension risk in men and women: a meta-analysis

A new meta-analysis looks at the association between alcohol consumption and incidence of hypertension in both men and women. Results show that for men any alcohol intake increases the risk of hypertension, compared to abstainers. For women, there is no increased risk up to 2 drinks per day. This meta-analysis was recently published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Association between alcohol consumption and lung cancer still unclear

A new study investigates the association between alcohol consumption and lung cancer in Spanish never smokers. The results, published in the scientific journal European Journal of Public Health, do not show a clear association. More research is needed to further investigate the association and the underlying mechanism.

Limited evidence for association between alcohol consumption and prostate cancer

Alcohol can increase the risk of certain types of cancer. However, the association with prostate cancer is still unclear. A recent meta-analysis looks into the specific association between wine consumption and prostate cancer. The overall evidence for an association is limited, but the results suggest that especially red wine might have protective effects for prostate cancer. The study is published in the scientific journal Clinical Epidemiology.

First meta-analysis on alcohol consumption and perceived attractiveness of others

What drives people to drink alcohol? Many factors play a role in this question. One of these factors involves the perception of physical attractiveness. A recently published meta-analysis combined all available research on the role of alcohol consumption in perceived attractiveness of others. The results, published in the scientific journal Addiction, show that alcohol consumption may have a small effect of increasing perceived attractiveness of people of the opposite sex.
