Moderate alcohol consumption lowers the total burden from chronic diseases

It is already known that moderate alcohol consumption can be protective against cardiovascular diseases and that (especially excessive) alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer. When taken all together, it appears that moderate alcohol consumption can lower the total burden from chronic diseases. That is the conclusion of Dutch researchers in a study that was recently published in the scientific journal European Journal of Epidemiology.

Moderate alcohol consumption protects against many cardiovascular diseases

We already know that moderate beer, wine or spirit consumption lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A new study concludes that this is the case for multiple specific cardiovascular diseases. The British researchers studied a very large group of adults and recently published the results in the scientific journal BMJ.

Beer, wine, and spirits and type 2 diabetes risk

It was already known that alcohol decreases the risk of type 2 diabetes. For the first time researchers investigated the effect of specific beverages on type 2 diabetes risk. Wine decreases the risk significantly, but it seems that also beer and spirits have beneficial effects. The meta-analysis is published in the scientific journal Journal of Diabetes Investigation.
